Below we review the types, causes, symptoms, diagnosis and treatment of congenital hearing loss.<\/p>\n<h2>Types of Congenital Hearing Loss<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"Ear Exam\" src=\"https:\/\/hcaudiology.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/hearing-loss-hearing-test-01-768x491.jpg\" alt=\"Woman takes a hearing test inside an audiologist's sound booth.\" width=\"272\" height=\"174\" class=\"wp-image-924 alignright\" srcset=\"https:\/\/hcaudiology.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/hearing-loss-hearing-test-01-768x491.jpg 768w, https:\/\/hcaudiology.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/hearing-loss-hearing-test-01-2048x1309.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/hcaudiology.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/hearing-loss-hearing-test-01-1536x982.jpg 1536w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 272px) 100vw, 272px\" \/><\/h2>\n<p>There are three types of congenital hearing loss:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Conductive hearing loss <\/strong>is caused by a physical blockage in the outer or middle ear, like a congenital deformity or fluid buildup.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Sensorineural hearing loss <\/strong>is caused by damage to the sensory cells in the inner ear, auditory nerve or brain.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Mixed hearing loss <\/strong>is a combination of conductive and sensorineural hearing loss.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Causes of Congenital Hearing Loss<\/h2>\n<p>There are many possible causes of congenital hearing loss:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Genetics <\/strong>are responsible for hearing loss among 50% to 60% of children with hearing loss, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/ncbddd\/hearingloss\/data.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)<\/a>. More than 180 deafness genes have been studied as genetic causes of congenital hearing loss.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Environmental factors <\/strong>can also affect a fetus, such as viral infections, bacterial infections, parasitic infections, use of alcohol and opioids, and jaundice.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Birth factors <\/strong>such as premature birth, low birth weight and birth injuries can also affect hearing.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Symptoms of Congenital Hearing Loss<\/h2>\n<p>Symptoms of congenital hearing loss in newborns may be hard to spot, which is why testing is essential. In older children, symptoms include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Not responding to their name<\/li>\n<li>Difficulty following instructions at [LOCAL \u2013 PRESCHOOL]<\/li>\n<li>Delayed language skills<\/li>\n<li>Turning the TV up<\/li>\n<li>Liquid drainage from the ear<\/li>\n<li>Earache or tugging on the ears<\/li>\n<li>Dizziness or vertigo<\/li>\n<li>Tinnitus (ringing in the ear)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Diagnosing Congenital Hearing Loss<\/h2>\n<p>Most babies born in hospitals are screened for hearing loss within the first few days of their life.
